The big meta-analysis

In 2016, researchers led by Alexander Burgoyne published a meta-analysis in the journal Intelligence that pooled many studies on chess skill and cognitive ability. They found chess skill is positively linked with intelligence, including fluid reasoning, but the link was modest. It also looked stronger in younger and less-skilled players than in strong adults.

The kids study

A 2007 study by Merim Bilalić and colleagues looked at children who play chess. Across the whole group, IQ was related to skill. But practice was the biggest predictor, and among the elite young players, IQ didn't predict who was better. The kids who'd practiced more won.

What that means for grandmasters

At the grandmaster level, everyone has put in thousands of hours. Once practice is that high, differences in IQ explain less. So even if GMs average above 100 (very likely), IQ doesn't sort them into who's world champion.

Viral grandmaster IQ claims, checked

You've seen the TikToks: "Magnus Carlsen IQ 190." "Kasparov IQ 190." Let's be real about these.

• Magnus Carlsen: there's no published, verified IQ score. The 190 number floats around without a source.
• Garry Kasparov: a widely repeated story says a German magazine had him tested in the 1980s and reported a score around 135. It's a secondhand report, but it's at least a story with a source, unlike "190."
• "All GMs are 150+": there's no dataset showing this. It's vibes.

Rule of thumb: if a famous person's "IQ" is a suspiciously round, huge number with no test named, it's fan fiction.

What makes chess players good (beyond IQ)

If IQ isn't the main driver, what is?

1. Pattern memory. Strong players recognize thousands of positions and tactics at a glance. It's like how you instantly recognize a meme format.
2. Deliberate practice. Solving puzzles, reviewing losses, studying games. Not just blitzing 50 games at 2 a.m.
3. Starting early. Many top players started young, which gives more time to build that pattern library.
4. Emotional control. Tilting after a blunder loses more games than a low IQ ever will.
5. Calculation. Seeing a few moves ahead accurately, which is trainable with puzzles.

If you're hardstuck, try this for two weeks and watch your rating:

1. Ten puzzles a day, slowly. Rushing puzzles trains guessing. Calculate the full line before you move.
2. Review every loss for one minute. Find the exact move where it went wrong. No excuses, no "lag."
3. Play longer time controls. 15+10 or slower gives your brain time to actually think instead of pre-moving on vibes.
4. Learn one opening per color. Enough to reach a normal middlegame, not a 30-move memorized line.
5. Stop at two losses in a row. Tilt is real, and it costs more rating points than any IQ gap.
