Digit Span Test Online Free: Try It and Read Your Score

7 min read · IQ Tester

You can take a digit span test online free right here: read a row of digits once, cover it, and type or say it back, first in the same order (forward span) and then in reverse (backward span). Your score is the longest row you get right. For forward span, many people land somewhere around 5 to 9 digits, and backward span is usually a digit or two shorter.

If you'd rather know whether working memory is actually one of your weak spots, IQ Tester checks that and six other reasoning problems in about two minutes: Find my weak spots.

How the digit span test works

What is a digit span test? It's one of the oldest and simplest memory tests. Someone reads you a string of digits at about one per second, and you repeat them back. Each round the string gets one digit longer. When you miss twice at the same length, the test stops.

There are two versions:

Versions of the digit span task appear in well-known clinical IQ tests, where they contribute to a working memory score. (More on that in is working memory part of IQ.) The version below is a casual self-check, not a clinical assessment.

How to take it on this page

  1. Use a piece of paper or your hand to cover the rows below.
  2. Uncover one row for about as long as it takes to read the digits slowly, once (roughly one second per digit).
  3. Cover it again. Wait two seconds.
  4. Say or write the digits.
  5. Uncover and check. Two tries at each length: pass at least one to move up.

Even better: have a friend read the rows aloud to you at a steady pace. That's how the real test is given.

Try it: forward digit span test

Say these back in the same order.

Length Try A Try B
3 5 8 2 6 9 4
4 6 4 3 9 7 2 8 6
5 4 2 7 3 1 7 5 8 3 6
6 6 1 9 4 7 3 3 9 2 4 8 7
7 5 9 1 7 4 2 8 4 1 7 9 3 8 6
8 5 8 1 9 2 6 4 7 3 8 2 9 5 1 7 4
9 2 7 5 8 6 2 5 8 4 7 1 3 9 4 2 5 6 8

Your forward span = the longest length where you got A or B fully right.

A tip while you do it: don't try any memory tricks yet. You want a clean baseline first.

Try it: backwards digit span

Now say each row in reverse. If you see 2 8 5, you say 5 8 2.

Length Try A Try B
2 2 4 5 7
3 6 2 9 4 1 5
4 3 2 7 9 4 9 6 8
5 1 5 2 8 6 6 1 8 4 3
6 5 3 9 4 1 8 7 2 4 8 5 6
7 8 1 2 9 3 6 5 4 7 3 9 1 2 8
8 9 4 3 7 6 2 5 8 7 2 8 1 9 6 5 3

Your backward span = the longest length you got fully right in reverse.

Why backward feels so much harder

In the backward digit span, you have to keep the whole row in mind while flipping it. That juggling is the essence of working memory: holding information and doing something with it at the same time.

What your digit span test score means

Here's the honest version, without made-up precision.

Your span Forward, roughly Backward, roughly
Below 5 / below 3 Shorter than most Shorter than most
5–6 / 3–4 Lower end of normal Common
7 / 5 A classic "typical" result On the stronger side
8–9+ / 6+ Longer than most Long

A few things to keep in mind about the digit span test average score:

This is the part that's hard to judge on your own: is a span of 5 a working memory weak spot, or did you rush, or did your attention wander? IQ Tester's 16 questions look at how you think and where it slips, and separate working memory from rushing and scattered attention. Find my weak spots

Chunking to stretch your span

Here's the fun part. Your span isn't just a fixed number of digits; it's closer to a fixed number of chunks. Group the digits and more fit.

Go back to a forward row you failed. Say you missed 5 9 1 7 4 2 8. Now try it like this:

  1. Hear it in groups: 591 · 742 · 8.
  2. Say each group as one number: "five ninety-one, seven forty-two, eight."
  3. Repeat.

Many people instantly gain one or two digits this way. That's not cheating on real life; it's exactly how you'd remember a phone number. It is, however, why formal digit span tests are read at a steady one-per-second pace with no grouping.

Chunking for backward span

Backward is harder to chunk, but you can do it in pairs: hear 8 1 2 9 3 6 5 as 81 · 29 · 36 · 5, then reverse inside each chunk and flip the order of the chunks: 5 · 63 · 92 · 18.

Retest after a week

One try tells you little. A second try, a week later, tells you a lot more.

A simple one-week digit span test practice plan:

If your score moves, great: you've learned to use your working memory more efficiently. If it doesn't, that's useful too; it tells you to lean on writing things down and chunking in daily life.

A digit span test online free shows you one piece of the picture: how many digits you can hold right now. IQ Tester shows you the rest in about two minutes, with a reasoning tier and up to seven named weak spots, including working memory. Then you get one tip and a 10-minute daily drill, a streak and a history, and you can retest any time.

FAQ

What is a normal digit span?

For forward span, many adults land roughly between 5 and 9 digits, often cited around 7. Backward span is usually a digit or two lower. Exact norms depend on age and how the test is run.

Is a digit span test a working memory test?

Partly. Forward span mostly measures how much you can hold briefly, while backward span also asks you to rearrange what you're holding, which is closer to working memory. Clinical IQ tests use digit tasks as part of a working memory score.

How can I improve my digit span?

Chunking gives the fastest boost, and daily practice with backward digits helps you get more comfortable holding and rearranging. Keep practice short and regular, and retest with new digits so you're not just memorizing the test.

Is a reverse digit span test online accurate?

Online versions are fine for a rough self-check and for tracking your own progress over time. They aren't a substitute for a test given by a trained professional, especially if you have real concerns about memory.

What is a good digit span score for a teenager?

Teens often score in a similar range to adults, and span generally grows through childhood into the teen years. If you're in the typical ranges in the table above, you're fine; a low one-off score is usually about tiredness or distraction.
