How to use these riddles
- Say your answer out loud or write it down before you look.
- Time yourself loosely: about a minute for warm-ups, up to three minutes for the rest.
- Score by section. Where you drop points tells you more than your total.
| Section | Riddles | The move it trains |
|---|---|---|
| Easy warm-ups | 1-4 | Flipping word meanings |
| Logic riddles | 5-9 | Following chains, testing cases |
| Number riddles | 10-14 | Setting up simple equations |
| Lateral-thinking riddles | 15-20 | Questioning the scene |

Answers with reasoning
Warm-up answers
- Your age. Step: "goes up" means "increases," not "moves upward."
- A needle. Step: "eye" has a second meaning, the hole in a needle.
- A clock. Step: same move, "hands" as clock hands.
- Footsteps. Step: "take" as in take steps, not take objects.
Logic answers
- His son. Step: he has no siblings, so "my father's son" is himself. The sentence becomes "that man's father is me."
- Take a fruit from the box labeled "Apples and Oranges." Step: that label is wrong, so the box holds only one kind. Say you pull an apple: it's the apples box. The box labeled "Oranges" can't be oranges (wrong label) and can't be apples (taken), so it's the mixed box. The last box is oranges.
- Light rope A at both ends and rope B at one end at the same time. When A burns out (30 minutes), light the other end of B. When B burns out, 45 minutes have passed. Step: burning from both ends halves the time, whatever the unevenness.
- Yes. Step: the zips that are zaps are also zops, because every zap is a zop. So at least some zips are zops. (Careful: the reverse, "some zops are zips," is also true here, but "all zips are zops" is not.)
- Weigh 3 against 3. If they balance, the heavy ball is in the remaining 2; weigh those against each other. If one side is heavier, take its 3 and weigh 1 against 1; if they balance, it's the third. Step: each weighing splits the options into three groups, not two.
Number answers
- 67. Step: half of 6 is 3, so she's 3 years younger. The gap never changes: 70 - 3.
- $2. Step: if half the price is "the rest," then $1 is the other half. Price = $1 + $1.
- 1, 2 and 3. Step: 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 and 1 x 2 x 3 = 6. Try small numbers first.
- 20 times. Step: count the ones place (9, 19, 29 ... 99 = 10) and the tens place (90 to 99 = 10). 99 counts twice.
- Today is January 1 and my birthday is December 31. Step: on December 30 I was 17. I turned 18 on December 31. This year I turn 19, and next year 20. Tie the numbers to a calendar.
Lateral-thinking answers
- He's bald. Step: the riddle assumes a head of hair it never mentions.
- Your breath. Step: "hold" doesn't have to mean with your hands.
- She's a photographer. She "shot" a photo, developed it in water, and hung it to dry. Step: every violent verb has a second meaning.
- A library. Step: "stories" as books, not floors.
- Corn on the cob. Step: the husk is thrown away, the cob is cooked, you eat the kernels and throw away the cob.
- Nothing. Step: read "nothing" as a thing. Poor people have nothing, rich people need nothing, and if you eat nothing, you starve.

FAQ
What are some high IQ riddles with answers?
The three mislabeled boxes, the two burning ropes and the eight balls on a balance are classic high IQ riddles. They need several careful steps rather than a quick flash of insight, and the reasoning is explained above.
Are riddles on real IQ tests?
Classic riddles like these aren't usually part of formal IQ tests, which tend to use pattern, number, verbal and logic questions. But riddles practise some of the same habits, like careful reading and step-by-step reasoning.
What are good iq riddles for adults?
Lateral-thinking riddles like the photographer (#17) and logic riddles like the portrait (#5) tend to stump adults as much as teens. Adults often have stronger assumptions, which makes them easier to trip up.
How do I get better at tricky iq riddles?
Before answering, list what you assumed and look for words with two meanings. For number riddles, write a quick equation instead of guessing. Practise a few a day and note which type fools you most.
