Visual Memory Test Average Score (and How to Beat It)

5 min read · IQ Tester

Short version: there's no official visual memory test average score, but on Human Benchmark's grid test, casual players often reach somewhere around level 8 to 11, with 12 to 15 being good and 16+ being seriously strong. Each level flashes more tiles on a bigger grid, and the jump from average to good mostly comes from seeing tiles as shapes, not dots.

If your memory feels fine in real life but tanks on these tests, IQ Tester can show whether it's memory, focus or pattern spotting that's the issue, and gives you a short daily drill: Find my weak spots.

Those levels are our ballpark guide, not official stats. Human Benchmark shows a live distribution chart below each test, which is the best way to see where you land today.

Visual memory test average score

Why is every "average visual memory score" you find online different?

So your real visual memory score is your typical run after warming up.

What a good score looks like

A rough, unofficial guide:

Level reached What it roughly means
Under 7 Early attempts; totally normal
8 to 11 Typical casual range
12 to 15 Good; you're grouping tiles
16 to 20 Great; you've got a solid method
20+ Elite territory

What is a good score on a memory test, really?

On a free online game, "good" just means better than your last run. Clinical memory tests are a totally different thing: they're scored by professionals against age norms. Online scores are for fun and practice, never a diagnosis.

Is this a photographic memory test?

Not really. Photographic memory in the "perfect snapshot" sense is mostly a myth. The grid test measures how much spatial info you can hold for a few seconds, and strategy matters a lot.

How the grid test works

  1. You see a grid of squares.
  2. Some tiles light up for a moment, then go blank.
  3. You click the tiles that lit up, in any order.
  4. Too many wrong clicks on a level and you lose a life. You have three.
  5. Each new level adds more tiles, and every so often the grid gets bigger.
  6. Lose all three lives and your score is the level you reached.

Unlike the sequence memory test, order doesn't matter here. It's all about where, not when. (Compare with our sequence memory test average score guide.)

Why visual memory tops out

Most people hit a wall somewhere past level 10. Here's why:

The fix: turn many tiles into a few shapes.

This is where going solo gets tricky. You can't easily tell if you're capped by memory, by focus, or by how fast you spot patterns, because in the moment it all just feels like "I forgot." IQ Tester figures that out, checking memory, speed, patterns, mental maths, verbal, logic and focus, then giving you a short daily drill for the one that's actually weak. Find my weak spots

Strategies: shapes, clusters, pictures

1. See shapes, not squares

When the tiles flash, look for the overall shape: a letter, an arrow, a smiley face, a wonky Tetris piece. One shape is way easier to hold than eight tiles.

2. Split the grid into zones

Mentally cut the grid into four corners. Remember "two in the top-left, a line along the bottom, one alone on the right." Each zone is one chunk.

3. Turn it into a picture

Some patterns look like things: a boat, a dog, a constellation. Name it in your head. Weird is memorable.

4. Look at the whole grid, not one tile

Soft-focus on the centre of the grid so you take in the whole thing at once. Staring at one corner makes you miss the other side.

5. Click the confident ones first

Start with the tiles you're sure about, then fill in the edges. Save the "hmm" tiles for last.

6. Warm up and stay fresh

A couple of warm-up rounds help, and short sessions beat long, tired ones.

Visual memory and spatial reasoning

Visual memory meaning

Visual memory is remembering what you've seen: faces, layouts, diagrams, where you left your AirPods. The grid test focuses on visuospatial memory, meaning where things are in space.

Visual memory vs spatial reasoning

Visual memory Spatial reasoning
What it does Holds what you saw Works out how shapes fit, rotate or move
Example Remembering a map Figuring out which way to turn
Useful for Diagrams, faces, layouts Geometry, design, puzzles, gaming

They work together. Spotting shapes in the grid test is basically spatial reasoning helping your memory out. That's also why pattern questions on an IQ-style test can feel similar.

Neither one is an IQ score on its own. If you're curious about how memory tests compare, the chimp test average score and verbal memory test average score guides cover the other popular Human Benchmark tests.

Beat the visual memory test average score by training the right skill

A visual memory level shows one skill. IQ Tester looks broader: 20 untimed questions across pattern, logic, number series and verbal analogy, with your score band and three of your four category strengths on the free result. Its guides then give you a short daily drill for memory, patterns or focus, whichever one is actually holding you back.

FAQ

What is the average score on the visual memory test?

There's no official single average. As a rough, unofficial guide, casual players often reach somewhere around level 8 to 11 on Human Benchmark's grid test.

What is a good visual memory score?

Level 12 to 15 is good for most people, and 16+ is very strong. The live chart on Human Benchmark shows how current players compare.

How can I improve my visual memory?

Group tiles into shapes and zones, look at the whole grid at once, and turn patterns into pictures you can name. Short, regular practice helps more than long sessions.

Is there a free visuospatial memory test online?

Yes. Human Benchmark's visual memory and sequence memory tests are free, browser-based visuospatial memory games. They're for fun and practice, not clinical assessment.

Does visual memory affect IQ?

Visual and working memory are related to some reasoning skills, but a visual memory score isn't an IQ score. Reasoning tests look at a broader mix like logic, patterns and verbal skills.
